COMPANION RELATIONSHIPS (incomplete)

SOLAS
Solas' complete and utter disdain for the Dalish does little else but boil Mahanon's blood. He's shaken Solas before and screamed in his face that the Dalish have nothing else, nothing left, and even though Solas reluctantly conceded...Mahanon hasn't quite forgiven him for it. He does have a begrudging respect for Solas as a fellow mage, and a very skilled one.

...May or may not be very jealous of Solas' Fadeventures. (PURELY ACADEMIC CURIOSITY... YES...)
CASSANDRA
He's never met a more intimidating person in his entire life. She's terrifying.

...But she definitely deserves and has earned respect. Her devotion to her faith, as well as her solemn willingness to admit to the Chantry's faults, only speak in her favor to Mahanon. Then he found out about her romantic side and, after howling with laughter at the irony where she couldn't hear him, decided that she's darling. (Still scary, though.)

He likes talking with her about Chantry history rather than doctrine. She has a more objective, critical view that way.

COLE
It was the slightest note of sadness in Cole's voice when he informed Mahanon that it would take hours for the soldier to die, asking in not so many words for permission to end his suffering, that made his heart break for the boy.

Solas would have been content to be fascinated with Cole, Cassandra and Vivienne would have had him throw Cole back out into the snow, but that first real interaction at Skyhold was what allowed Mahanon to only see Cole, and do nothing but want to help him.

He would have continued believing Cole to be an anomaly of a spirit, like Solas (bah), had Varric not suggested that he was becoming human. Then it seemed pretty obvious, and though he had an idea of how painful the change would be, he gently supported Varric and promised to be waiting on the other side of the decision.

VIVIENNE
It takes Mahanon quite a while to figure out how he feels about Vivienne. He always respects unwavering self-confidence, and the certainty she has about her view of the world and her place in it is definitely admirable, in its way.

It does, however, trouble him that she seems unwilling to lend much weight to the experiences of mages who truly suffered in their respective Circles, or of a situation like Kirkwall with a city-wide system of active oppression. In time, he understands that her perspective of mages may align much with that of the Chantry, but still comes from a place of compassion for her fellow mages and a wish to protect their interests, but not without remembering their place within the wider scope of religion and national cultures.
SERA
It's surprising, really, how well he gets along with Sera, especially given his initial misgivings. It wasn't just her distaste for the Dalish, but also her strange kind of logic that was off-putting.

Ultimately, Mahanon respects and somewhat envies her freedom from loyalty to any one group of people besides that of those who need support and help most, which is definitely something he can get behind. He loves that she's able to bring out a goofier side of himself that he's forgotten about.

He'll do anything she asks, whether that means pranking Cullen and risking his wrath, or risking the Inquisition's reputation to help a few disadvantaged people level the playing field...or at least, just get a little even.
IRON BULL
There's a distinct nag in the back of Mahanon's mind that if he hadn't met Dorian, he might have gone the Bull route instead. He still finds Bull WILDLY attractive (and secretly wishes he wasn't strictly monogamous), but if nothing else is glad to have a friend to get drunk and rowdy with.

He also greatly respects Bull's devotion to his Qun culture, but loves that Bull carved out a family for himself when the Qun gives none. Telling Bull to choose the Chargers over his people was one of the hardest things Mahanon's ever done, and he thinks he'll always worry whether he made the right choice. Though he thinks it's better for Bull as a person to love the Chargers, Mahanon and Bull have mutual sense of belonging to one's people and he knows how important being Dalish is to himself, but is unsure which was more important to Bull. He can't imagine what he would have done if in the same position.
DORIAN
Ma emma lath. Dorian isn't Mahanon's first, but he hopes Dorian will be his last.

That said, his feelings about Dorian sometimes get tangled. Despite Mahanon's furious passion for the rights and care of elves, he adores Dorian more than he hates Dorian's seemingly willfully naive, privileged outlook on the lives of slaves in Tevinter. (Especially the elven ones, obviously.) Mahanon has burst into fits of tearful rage at Dorian over this in the past, and then later ended up sobbing apologies on Dorian's shoulder for yelling at him. In time, he's even sort of come to understand where the slightly blind perspective viewpoint comes from, even if he still thinks it's wrong.

As someone who considers being Dalish a strong part of his identity, Mahanon also reluctantly respects Dorian's love for his country...even if Mahanon HATES Tevinter on principle.

He loves Dorian's friendly, easy nature. His studiousness, intelligence, and quick wit. He admires Dorian's self-esteem and confidence. most especially how it thrived despite the horror of what Dorian's father tried. More than that, he adores Dorian's kindness, which often goes unrecognized or understated beneath the veneer of Dorian's ego.

Dorian came up with the endearment of "Hana" (pronounced like the name "Hannah", not the Japanese word for 'flower') and is the only one allowed to use it.

Except maybe Cole. Because precious son.
LELIANA
The advisor he respects most. He admires not only her ability to see and understand the shades of gray in the world, but that she accepts them, usually without judgement, and knows how to use them to her advantage. He likes to ask her questions about the Chantry and its teachings. She tends to be pretty respectful that he asks as a curious non-believer.

JOSEPHINE
It must be said that Mahanon feels very guilty for barely being able to understand Josephine. He doesn't understand the need for politics, manners, cultural niceties, and the need to adhere to them. (semi hypocritical of him, but) As he finds them a waste of time and a frustrating mess that only ever complicates simple matters, he certainly doesn't understand someone who enjoys them.

He knows that she's very sweet and very good at what she does, and in the end that's what matters.
